Sometimes it’s ridiculously hard to know what size picture lighting you should have!
Should it be as wide as the entire painting?
Or does it not matter at all?
The simple answer is—it depends on the effect you want to achieve with your brilliant picture lighting.
(Like, for example, having a picture light that’s as wide as the actual painting so you can dramatically highlight every detail. Do what feels right for you!)
But we’ve summed up the usual guidelines in the image here in the article.
If you have a portrait, the light should be about half the width of the painting.
If it’s landscape, it should be about a third to half the width of the painting, depending on HOW big it is, and so on.
It’s also good to keep in mind that the picture light should be a little bigger than the rule suggests if the frame is very large or thick.
And another thing to consider is how far the picture light projects outward if the frame is thick… so that it actually manages to light up the artwork itself!
